Over the past several years, sub-mm and mm-wavelength experiments conducted during the Austral summer have confirmed many of the expected benefits of Antarctic atmospheric conditions. In conjunction with recent revolutionary improvements in the sensitivities and sizes of IR detector arrays and advancements in instrument automation, these efforts have furnished fresh incentives for South Polar observatory planning. An evaluation is presented of the potential advantages of Antarctic sites for IR astronomy.
